GERMAIN'S PEACOCK PHEASANT

PHOTO: KENNETH W. FINK

The Germain's is similar to the Grey Peacock Pheasant, but is considerably more drab in coloring and has no crest or ruff. In behavior, they seem wilder than most other peacock pheasants when in captivity. They have a habit of flying up and uttering a loud, raucous alarm call if disturbed suddenly. As with all the peacock pheasants, a nesting basket several feet off the ground is likely to be preferred to nest boxes on the ground.

They come from eastern Cochin China and southern Annam where they live in forests from sea level to around 4,000 feet (1,200 meters). Once settled, they breed well in captivity. Almost all the captive stock is in America.
