ROTHSCHILD'S PEACOCK PHEASANT

The Rothschild's or Mountain Peacock Pheasant lives in the rugged mountain country. In 1976, I wrote "few have ever been in captivity and little is known about them." Fifteen years later the position has changed as they have been very successfully bred by Dr. Ken Searle at the Hong Kong Botanical Bird Gardens and at the captive-breeding centers of the Malaysian Forests and Wildlife Department.

Minimum aviary size 100 - 150 sq. ft. (9.3 - 14 m2)
Status in captivity Still rare, but increasing
Full adult plumage First year, but less bright
Egg clutch size 2 eggs
Incubation Period22 - 23 days
Feeding HabitsNormal pheasant diet plus peanuts, chopped fruit,
seeds, mealworms, etc.
