SALVADORI'S PHEASANT

A rather drab species, the Salvadori's cock bird looks very similar in size, shape, and color to the hen Malay Crestless Fireback with the principal obvious difference being a bright -yellow spot behind the eye. The hen is of bright reddish-chestnut coloring and is similar in size to the male.

They come from deep, mountain forest in west Sumatra. The first record of them is a cock and three hens which arrived at Cleres in 1939. They were lost in the war that followed shortly after. Recently, pairs have been imported into America and Europe. Messieurs Houpert and Lastere in France and Tadashi Yamashita in Japan in 1976 became the first to breed from this species. Later, Charles Sivelle also bred them in America. Since, they have become more widely spread in captivity.
