THE TRUE PHEASANTS

There are two principal species of True Pheasant, P. colchicus and P. versicolor, and many subspecies, particularly of P. colchicus. They are known as a game bird rather than as an aviary bird so that a description is unnecessary. They are almost as beautiful as any of the ornamental pheasant species. Due to man's interference many of the pure subspecies are no longe pure. An example of this arose in the U.K when Formosan Ring necked Pheasants crossed with Chinese Ring-necked Pheasants which were released on the island. A number of mutations have also arisen.
